Singularity 2050

19 Feb

I once read this Utopian book titled: “The singularity is near”. Where he predicts the merging of man with machine. Where nanomachines are used to enhance the human experience. And even to replace the individual neurons of the brain. Man will be merged with machine to create the perfect body. A future is envisioned where humans become the ubermensch with the use of technology.

I striking similarity with the glorified bodies promised by the scriptures:

1 Corinthians 15:42-53

New International Version 1984 (NIV1984)

42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”[a]; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we[b] bear the likeness of the man from heaven.

50 I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

Can fleshly faculties conceive of the perfect immortal body envisioned by god? For this may be a vain venture and various problems may arise:

Jeremiah 17:5

This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.
For man to receive perfection outside the will of god is to labor in vain. As the results of various utopian societies demonstrate so it is will it be with technology. For the substance of the glorified body is spiritual but solid. But this body envisioned by man will be limitations imposed on the thoughts and powers of man as much as it can enhance and give apparent superhuman capabilities as it promises to give. It ultimately will be a vain venture when the world is consumed by fire and the ancient of days and the lamb reveals their glory and their wrath.
